How to Activate eSIM Abroad: Step-by-Step

You can and should install an eSIM ahead of time, before you fly — the profile itself doesn't start counting down until you turn it on, so installing the QR code at home doesn't use any data or affect your trip.

Step 1: Install the profile ahead of time, at home

Right after buying a plan, you'll get a QR code (usually by email). Scan it at home, on your own Wi-Fi — the phone downloads the carrier profile, but the network connection stays off. This avoids relying on finding Wi-Fi at the airport to scan the code.

Step 2: Don't turn the eSIM on too early

After installing, the profile shows up in your list of SIMs in settings, but it's best to leave it off until you land (or right before departure, if your plan counts down from activation rather than purchase) — otherwise you'll burn paid days or gigabytes before you actually need them.

Step 3: Turn on eSIM and set priorities

Once you land, go to settings → SIM cards → turn on the new eSIM. On iPhone and most Android phones you can immediately set:

• Which card handles mobile data (choose the eSIM)
• Which handles calls and texts (usually keep your home SIM)

Step 4: Verify the connection

Open any website or app that needs internet, without Wi-Fi — if it loads, the eSIM is working. The signal indicator in your status bar should show the new carrier's name.

If the profile won't install

• No internet to scan the QR code — switch to Wi-Fi (mobile data isn't required to install a profile)
• The QR code was already scanned once — most profiles are single-use; you can't reuse the same code, you'll need a new one from the provider
• Phone doesn't support eSIM or is carrier-locked — check model compatibility (see the compatible phones guide) and confirm the device isn't locked to a single carrier
• Profile installed but no signal — confirm the plan's coverage region actually includes your current country, and give it a few minutes — activation can take a little time after the first connection to a local network
