Pre-Flight eSIM Checklist: Six Minutes at Home Beats Two Hours at the Airport

Six minutes the night before you fly saves two hours of fiddling at the airport. This checklist is not theory: it is assembled from our own support tickets, covering exactly the places travellers get stuck and what to do at home to avoid them.

If you need the full walkthrough, we have one: how to activate an eSIM abroad. This page is different — a short list for the evening before departure.

Why a checklist is needed at all

An eSIM is simple but unfamiliar. People buy it like a normal SIM and expect it to just work. In practice it needs three settings changed, nobody warns you about them, and you end up making those changes in a foreign country on a dying battery with no internet.

A typical support ticket reads like this: landed, LTE showing in the status bar, no internet, and the first thought is that the purchase was a scam. In fact the profile is installed and working — the phone is simply still routing data through the home SIM.

The night-before checklist

1. Check the phone before you buy

Dial *#06#. If the list that opens includes an EID line, eSIM is supported. If it does not, the phone cannot do eSIM and no plan will change that.

Do this before paying. Regional versions of some models ship without eSIM support, and people discover this with a plan already bought. A refund is possible, of course, but it does not bring the trip any closer.

2. Install the profile at home, over Wi-Fi

Downloading the profile is the one moment internet is required. At home you have it. At the arrival airport the Wi-Fi often demands an SMS confirmation sent to a local number you do not have yet — a loop people usually escape by overpaying for a SIM at a kiosk.

Installing starts nothing. The package's validity begins only at the first connection to a network in your destination.

3. Remember what the line is called

This is the detail that costs travellers the most time. Your phone will not call the line by our name. During setup it asks for a label and offers options: Personal, Secondary, Travel, Business.

After landing you will need to switch on that exact line. If there are several labels and you have forgotten which is yours, it is easy to open your home carrier's settings and enable roaming there instead — which means its rates and its bill. This happens regularly.

Tip: give the line a label you will recognise, and remember it.

4. Save the QR and activation code offline

Take a screenshot of the QR code and copy the activation code into your phone's notes. Email can land in spam, and finding it needs internet — precisely what you do not have at that moment.

The activation code is a long string starting with LPA:1$. It installs the profile manually when there is no way to scan the QR — and you cannot scan it off your own screen, that needs a second device.

5. Do not switch the line on early

An installed profile sits disabled and consumes nothing. Switching it on at home is unnecessary and can even hurt: in some cases the phone connects and starts the validity clock early.

6. Make sure the phone is not carrier-locked

Handsets bought on a carrier instalment plan sometimes refuse third-party profiles. The only way to find out is to install — one more reason to do it at home rather than at the airport.

After landing: three switches

That is the whole list. It takes a minute.

First, switch on our line. Settings → Cellular → pick the line with that label → Turn On This Line. Make sure it is not your carrier's line: if you picked the wrong one, its name appears at the top of the screen.

Second, point the internet at it. On the same screen, the Cellular Data row: it points at your home SIM, switch it to ours. Without this the profile will be installed, enabled and completely useless — data keeps flowing through your home carrier.

Third, enable Data Roaming inside our line. This is the one people skip. A travel eSIM joins the local operator as a guest, which is to say in roaming — and without that checkbox the phone honestly shows LTE while giving you no internet. Roaming here is included in the package price and costs nothing extra.

You do not need to disable your home SIM: it stays for calls and texts. Do turn its mobile data off, though, so the phone does not wander into your carrier's expensive roaming.

Three things that scare people for nothing

No Number on the eSIM line. That is expected. A travel eSIM gives you data, not a phone number. Calls and messages stay on your home SIM.

The profile vanished from the list after installation. Sometimes it appears with a delay or hides under a different label. A reboot usually settles it.

No network in the first few minutes. At busy airports registration can take up to ten minutes. If it takes longer, toggle airplane mode, then in the line's settings turn off automatic network selection and pick a local operator by hand.

If it still does not work

Message us and attach a screenshot of the Cellular settings screen. It shows everything at once: whether the profile is installed, whether the line is on, where mobile data points. The cause usually turns up within a minute, and it is nearly always one of the three switches above.

Most of the time it is one of those switches. But it can also be our side: a profile may fail to be issued or fail to download onto the phone — in that case we issue a new one, no questions and no extra charge. If that one does not work either, we refund you.

FAQ

The phone shows LTE but there is no internet. Why?

Almost always because Data Roaming is off for the eSIM line. A travel eSIM is a roaming profile by design: it joins the local network as a guest. Without that switch the phone sees the network and displays LTE, but no data flows.

My eSIM line says No Number. Is it faulty?

No, that is expected. A travel eSIM provides mobile data only, without a phone number. Calls and texts stay on your home SIM, which you do not need to remove.

Should I enable roaming on my home carrier too, just in case?

The opposite — turn it off. Your home carrier's roaming means its rates and its bill. Enable roaming only for the eSIM line, where it is already included in the package price.

The QR code will not scan. What now?

Enter the activation code by hand: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Enter Details Manually. The code arrives together with the QR, which is exactly why it is worth saving to your notes in advance.

I did everything and it still does not work.

Message support and attach a screenshot of your Cellular settings screen. It shows whether the profile is installed, whether the line is on and where mobile data points — the answer usually takes a minute to find.
